Teen Rock Band

In this class, students will plug in, turn up, and put on a show of their favorite rock songs. This ensemble is a great opportunity for beginner-intermediate drummers, guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, vocalists, and wind players looking to hone and showcase their talents with a small group of peers. Repertoire will be open to classic rock, punk, and modern pop/rock. Students will suggest songs that they like and the group as a whole will come up with a final set list for a concert at the end of the six week class period. Open to grades 7-12.

Drawing and Painting: a Traveling Course

This class will meet in a different location in the Florence and Northampton area each week. Through drawing and watercolor painting, students will engage with the landscape, streetscape, architecture and people we encounter at each site. Students will have the freedom to explore subject matter of their choice and will receive guidance and support in creating their visual investigations. We will practice observing relationships, rendering perspective, measuring proportions, mixing colors and building value through experimentation with wet and dry media. All experience levels are welcome.

Watercolor Basics!

Dust off your watercolor boxes, folks; it’s time to reclaim them! Watercolor is a wonderful way to learn how to paint. In this class, we’ll cover the fundamentals of color-mixing and learn to make close observations about color and light. We’ll have fun experimenting with color and laying down paint. Finally, we’ll take our skills outdoors and make some plein-air color sketches. All experience levels are welcome.

The Craft of Drawing

This class will seek to explore the craft of drawing as a means of observation and play. Students will establish and generate various techniques for approaching drawing. We’ll strengthen skills and have fun experimenting with the expressivity of line, determining proportional relationships and understanding value—while challenging our ways of seeing. This class is appropriate both for beginning artists and experienced artists looking for fresh perspectives. All ages will be challenged to craft their own practice of drawing. (Ages 9 and up).

Playing with Portraits

This class will introduce several approaches to drawing the human form. Students will strengthen basic skills for all drawing, including measurement, understanding proportion, conveying volume, and observing light. We’ll apply these tools around the theme of portraiture and play around with our understanding of how portraits can be made. All experience levels are welcome.
